XIAFLEX® for Dupuytren's Contracture
Dupuytren's contracture is a condition that causes a progressive, abnormal thickening of the tissue in the palm of the hand that leads to stiffness and an inability to straighten the fingers. Until now, the only treatment option was surgery. On March 1st, 2011, the FDA approved XIAFLEX® (collagenase clostridium histolyticum) for the treatment of Dupuytren's contracture which can be administered in the office via injection. XIAFLEX® contains a mixture of proteins that are injected directly into the Dupuytren's cord that dissolves the collagen in the contracture. The following day, patients return to the office for a gentle manipulation of the finger which releases the contracture.
